Prague, December 19, 2024
Game Developers Session once again combined a game development conference with an educational event aimed at high schools, universities, and the general public. It is the oldest Central European conference dedicated to game development, game technologies, business, and marketing. This year, the event hosted a total of 124 speakers and 76 indie teams. The conference also featured notable domestic names: Viktor Bocan, Dan Vávra, Jarek Kolář, and Marek Rosa. This year, the event was expanded to include an independent developers' festival and two summits on artificial intelligence and gaming law.
The Game Developers Session officially opened on December 13 at the Prague Congress Centre with the participation of Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda and festival director Pavel Barák. "I’m thrilled that we managed to bring big names from the gaming industry to Prague, such as Mike Morasky, Jon Shafer, Glen Schofield, and Kate Edwards. Their lectures were highly appreciated by the attendees and fully booked. The conference also hosted several Czech speakers like Jarek Kolář, Marek Rosa, Viktor Bocan, and Dan Vávra," said Pavel Barák, director of the GDS conference.
Video game fans had the opportunity to meet representatives of 11 bit Studios – creators of Frostpunk 2, Larian Studios, who showcased the popular game Baldur's Gate 3, and GSC, who spoke about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl.
"There was enormous interest in the video game Kingdom Come Deliverance II, which visitors could try on-site with a playable 20-minute demo on a larger number of PCs. They also had the chance to talk directly with representatives of Warhorse Studios, who developed the game," summarized Pavel Barák, director of the GDS conference.
The event was accompanied by a packed program across six tracks of lectures and workshops from dozens of experts from major game studios worldwide. Alongside presentations from established Czech studios like Hangar 13, Giants Software, and Flying Rats, more than 70 projects from independent game developers from the Czech Republic and around the world were showcased at the exhibition. Visitors could try these projects on-site, and the best ones were awarded as part of the Indie Games Expo Awards:
- Best Art - Medix - Buldozer Production (CZ) (GDS web)
- Best Technology - Tempo Punk - Matima Studio (LT) (Steam)
- Surprise from GDS - TrashCan Dream - Decafraindrop Studio (US) (GDS Web)
- Best Game - Paper Trail - Newfangled Games (GB) (Steam)
- Community Vote - The Fallen Thrones - Dreamrise Studios (SK)
An integral part of the event was a series of interactive workshops on various topics and areas of game development. The workshops were created in collaboration with CzechInvest and the Entrepreneurship Support project, along with ANOMALIA game development and animation courses. The entire conference was held under the auspices of the Prague 4 district.
